Business Consulting

Global Realities & Local Business Success

Information is the key to competitiveness

The realities of globalization means that local grocery stores serving local communities have to compete with global supermarket chains. Local diners too now have to compete with Multinational fast food corporations for the local consumer.

Shifting through the information overload an International Business Consultant can work with local businesses to help them focus on the important information necessary to remain competitive in their existing market and even reposition for new market opportunities.

A small business can by creating a web presence transform into a micro-multinational enterprise capturing new markets within a wider area of a city or even worldwide.

An International Business Consultant can help create a knowledge matrix, which can be utilized to create a Business Plan and develop Marketing Strategies that guide a business towards making wise decisions to achieve success and add value to the business.
Information ---------->   Knowledge ------------->   Wisdom----------------->   Success
Processed                  Distilled                       Applied                        Achieved
The International Business Consultant can work with the business to obtain the necessary information to prepare a Business Plan & Marketing Strategies that profit from the numerous opportunities in the market place.

Let Passion Drive Your Ambition

Here I am sitting in a trendy cafe come "art gallery". While enjoying a mug of free trade coffee, I feast my eyes on the beautiful paintings on the walls around me.

The passion of the artist succeeds in creating an uplifting atmosphere in a room full of patrons all engaged in lively chatter as we sip our drink of choice and enjoy the meal prepared by a chef who is equally passionate.

This experience confirms that to succeed with a business idea you need to be passionate about what you do.

Passion comes from the realization that what is considered as current business practices were at one time radical ideas that captured the imagination of consumers.

We see the traditional local diners disappear with the advent of fast food cafes. But, the realization has to be that fresh ideas can re-invent a seemingly age old business. In this cafe I experience a fresh idea that is capturing the imagination of consumers in the city.

Business start ups should focus on identifying the consumer need that the new business idea serves to fulfill. The passion of the entrepreneur has to infect the consumer creating enthusiasm and a desire for what is being offered. The sale is made repeatedly when consumers believe they have received value and a desire in them has been fulfilled.

The challenge is therefore, in creating products and services that provide a positive experience for consumers who then come back for more and who additionally become advocates speaking with passion about their experience. This can create a positive feed-back cycle that drives the business to pursue improvements and innovations with renewed passion.

Infect your team, the community and consumers with your passion and allow the feel good factor to lift your spirits and stimulate your drive to be better at your business.

IMPROVING TEAM PERFORMANCE
Energizing The Spirit Of The Team

For success in 2013 we must channel fresh energy to lift the spirits of our team members so they feel motivated and driven to achieve the targets and goals set-out in our Action Plan.

Let the team members give in-put so the Action Plan prepared towards the end of last year can be fine tuned to include any new suggestions and realities that may have emerged since the planning stage.

With this fresh perspective our Action Plan should be ready for implementation.

Invite all team members to a launch event that pumps up the energy so they start implementing the plan with enthusiasm.

We should set dates for achieving "mile stone" targets along the way to reaching the main goals for the year. At these dates schedule meetings to allow feed back and review of targets achieved and targets missed.

It is critical that all team members be allowed to give their in-put and understand the reasons for success or lack of success at each "mile stone" target date.

The Action Plan should be adjusted and figures re-worked based on the review so the organization remains on track to achieving the goals for the year.

It is important that team members feel a sense of ownership of the Action Plan, the review process and decision making process.

Create a sense of ownership at these meetings. This will transform the individual members into a team. The result is a synergy which allows more to be achieve within a set time frame leading to improved performance and increased competitiveness.

Performance and competitiveness are the key words for success in 2013.

Reward success to maintain a positive team spirit throughout the year.

Wishing your success in 2013!

Business Enterprise and the Social Environment
Connecting with consumers in your community

All successful businesses serve the needs of the community in which they operate.

By interacting with the local community a business can build trust and encourage visits by individuals who become loyal customers.

The idea of providing performance space in a cafe to local talent for FREE performances that draw in a crowd is an excelent idea. In search of a blend of good "breakfast tea" to compliment my fair trade coffee collection I came across a tea place that has succeeded in becoming a Friday evening "family venue" for music performances over a cup of tea or coffee with pastries. This has encouraged sales of packets of tea infusions to those who just dropped in for some entertainment.

These events now create a buzz of conversation on local musical talent in the community, establishing a venue to meet, socialize and enjoy local musical performances over a cuppa.

A community service project that compliments your business is a great way to build a loyal consumer group. Your loyal consumers are the ones who promote your events and products through word of mouth to family, friends and colleagues at work.

The added good news is, being a successful business that draws in the crowd very often attracts other successful businesses into the neighborhood. These businesses can stimulate the local economy creating human and financial profit for both businesses and the local community.

Community service by businesses does pay in the long term.

Create your community event and enjoy success.

Action Speaks Louder than Words
Research, analyze, & walk the talk

Do Market Research Quietly

Still waters run deep! This saying is advice to be knowledgeable and to speak only when necessary.
You should do your product and market research. Listen to feedback and understand your competition.
No matter what you are selling whether a product or service, chances are there are several competitors out in the market offering pretty much what you are offering. Ask your customers why they come to you for business. Make notes regarding your positive and negative qualities. Do not hesitate to ask customers how you can improve.
From this feedback, analyse your strengths and weaknesses. Create a sales strategy around your strengths and find ways to remedy your weaknesses. Seek the advice of business consultants, skills trainers and your peers in the business.
Write down what makes you and your product or service different or unique. Build your brand and image around these features and strengths. Apply your sales strategy daily.

Have an Action Plan with a Review Function

Do not focus too much on your past good performance.

In order to continue performing successfully you have to take fresh action daily based on an Action Plan that sets out daily, weekly, monthly and yearly schedule. You should review your Action Plan periodically. It is a good idea to have a brief weekly review, followed by a more detailed review perhaps every three months.

Remember, the laws of business success favour those who can best adapt to the changing environment. Do not hesitate to review your plan at any point in the year when changes in the market occur that could impact on your performance either positively or negatively.

Be a Specialist with Contacts in other fields

Do not be a “know-it-all” having a little knowledge on many things but little in-dept knowledge in your area of business. The “talkers” may get heard by the markets but the “quiet doers” very often end up closing the most profitable sales. This happens when you get value added expert advice for your customers.

Ask your customers what they are looking for in your service or product and work to deliver on their expectations. Remember, business is not just about delivering on a promise but is additionally about keeping the customer satisfied. You want your customer to talk about their positive experience in dealing with you. A satisfied customer is very often a long term repeat customer and promoter of your business.

Be a Daily Doer

Wake up in the morning and apply yourself to the tasks on your schedule.

The greatest satisfaction comes from doing the most difficult thing first. If it is picking up the phone to make the daily calls, just do it. Smile before you make that phone call. The person on the other end will “hear your smile” through the cheerful melody in your voice. Keep your conversation short and to the point.

A good practice is to write out a draft e-mail of what you want to say. Immediately after the call redraft the e-mail to take into account the positive points in the conversation. Click to send when satisfied with the accuracy and tone of the e-mail. You would have immediately left a reminder of your conversation with the customer.

If you do need to attach further information to your e-mail that requires research or looking up data then by all means get the information first before sending the e-mail.

Short thank you notes and brief spoken words of appreciation should be part of your business process. This could encourage sales and prompt payment.

Ultimately business success is about having happy, paying customers!

From Idea to Entrepreneurship
Learning to be successful

The 21st century global economy demands that we re-invent ourselves continually through life long education. This is necessary as technology increasingly inter-connects us worldwide.

I have often said that, "All business is global! Even a local diner has to compete with a global food chain very often located just down the road".

In a world such as this, re-inventing ourselves so we continue to serve up something refreshing to keep the customer satisfied becomes the key ingredient for continued success.

From the time of hunter gathers to the agricultural age onward to the industrial and now information age, it has always been the ability to learn that has brought progress to human society.

In today's democratic information economy we can all tap into our natural human ability to innovate and be enterprising.

The capacity to be entrepreneurial is inherent in most of us. The question then is choice and our natural disposition. We need to decide whether we want to create our own business organization or to work for an organization. Either way we need to tap into our inherent capacity to learn new things and re-invent ourselves so we may be useful to the organization we serve.Productivity is an important ingredient for success and happiness.

The right and ability to pursue happiness is available for many of us. The question then is, do we choose to act?

We should seize the global opportunities to learn and develop the mindset for positive action.

May continual success be yours!

Positive Business Expansion and Growth
Finding opportunity amidst uncertainty

Financial reports on increased profits can come from the business’s earnings as a factor of growth or expense reduction.
We need to analyse further to determine whether the business is increasing profits due to innovation that results in more profitable business and market growth or whether it appears to be increasing due to the cutting of expenses to hit profit numbers for investors?
In a period of global economic uncertainty it is prudent for businesses to reduce expenses. However this prudence is only justified to the extent that it also includes a plan for innovation leading to achieving more with less. This requires a mindset for deploying assets and talents in an innovative manner.
Thinking out of the box by setting new norms of behavior can lead to not just business survival but additionally an expansion trajectory in an environment where everyone else seems to be contracting their business.
The truth of the matter is, expansion is life and contraction is death. While it is very often true that 80% of our business comes from the 20% of loyal customers who need to be cultivated and encouraged to remain loyal, a growth strategy can ensure that not all our eggs are put in one basket.
Consolidation and expansion through innovation is a key to growth in an uncertain environment. The laws of nature after all suggest that the most adaptable are the ones that survive and thrive in the new stable environment that emerges.
Once the financial crisis in the European Union is finally resolved a new global prosperity will embrace those business that are able to offer the new products and services that the new economy demands.
Already businesses that have embraced social media and smart technology devices are finding markets globally through e-commerce.  Websites are transforming themselves from mere e-brochures into e-stores that encourage customer relations that lead to e-sales.
Whatever your business, now is the time to do a market study to identify new growth markets and the fresh expectations of consumers. The Asia-Pacific economic growth is creating new opportunities for  businesses in India, China, South East Asia and the West Coast of North America.
Seek out business consultants to work with your team to identify new markets as well as new trends that can help you channel innovation towards producing the next generation of products and services. This will help you to take the necessary calculated risk to achieve continued business growth through innovation.

Re-energize and Lead Your Team
Achieve Greater Success in 2012

Tips to inspire you and your team members

Excite The Team with Your Vision

Each new year requires a re-dedication to the vision and goals of the organization through an evaluation of current realities and feed back from customers.

Encourage team members to claim ownership of the vision in a way that excites them into action.

Select The Right Person for The Job

This requires not just ensuring that the individual is qualified and competent, but additionally that they have the right personality and attitude for the set task.

Remember that different job functions may require different personality types. A personality weakness in one job may translate into a strength when re-assigned to another job function.

Consider investing into training and hiring from within.

Have a Practical Written Agenda for Action

In listing out the steps to be taken to achieve the targets set in the Action Plan remember to make them achievable with deadlines for completion.

Listen to Feedback from The Team & Customers

Remember that many hands make for light work. Encourage a team spirit that leads to creative synergy resulting in task being completed more easily without compromise on quality.

Understand that behind every great leader is a team. Every team member knows they can’t make it on their own. But Together Each Achieves Magic!

Business is About Delivering Value

Focus not just on delivering a service or product. Delight your customers by giving them a memorable positive experience.

Create a feel good factor within the team and amongst your customers.

Believe in Your Vision And Share This with The World

Broadcasting your values and vision creates expectation that once met creates loyalty from the team and customers who become advocates spreading the good word to their personal network of family, friends and associates.

Monitor Performance and Stay in Control

Personally get involved in understanding the facts on the ground through regular feed back, briefings and on the ground visits.

Remote monitoring should be supplemented with sufficient periodic face to face meetings that allow you to understand the facts behind the numbers.

Reward good performance and remedy weaknesses promptly.

Ensure that staff have access to coaching and consulting advise that allows them to learn and implement solutions in a manner that enhances their self-esteem.

Be a Great Leader

It is important that each member of a team is made to feel they count. Be consistent in praising and encouraging good behavior.

Rewarding success motivates individuals to perform better. Always deliver more then is expected.

Think big, act boldly and always exceed the expectations of team members.

Make 2012 your year for exceptional performance and success.

Have a great year!

Today's Global Marketing Opportunity
Profiting From The Information Overload

Globalization is operating in tandem with the rise of a worldwide consumer network receiving and sending out information through the worldwide web at greater and greater volumes and speed. This has resulted in an ever widening gap between the evolving market demands and an ability of businesses to respond to these demands.

Ever increasing information about consumer taste and expectations is finding its way around the world and businesses are not processing available information about market demands fast enough to take advantage of the opportunities created through freer information flow.

Today’s consumer is ever more socially networked. Even those who are not linked up by computers are kept in the loop at social gatherings about opinions articulated over the internet regarding products and services on offer.

With courier companies able to deliver practically anywhere in the world and payment modes ranging from the internet to mobile phones and the more traditional banks and post offices, consumers can now shop for products from anywhere in the world. This means being the only store in town may not guarantee an exclusive local market share.

The good news is both local and global businesses can tap into this information overload with the help of business consultants who can provide services in data analysis, marketing and business planning that help increase sales to a more targeted market segment.

The challenge is to successfully build a community of consumers who can provide feedback and act as advocates of your products or services to a wider web of consumers.

Businesses need to develop the ability to use the data available to define their brand image in the minds of consumers. The alternative would be that consumers may end up defining the brand and image of businesses. Once a negative image becomes linked to a particular business it could be transmitted virally throughout the internet and into the real world where consumers experience a product, service or brand.

A healthy food cafe believed that they were in business to serve a health conscious segment of a local community. They did not realise that if they were to shift their marketing focus to emphasising that “healthy ingredients means tasty treats” they would find the long lines of customers that frequent the many local outlets of a global speciality cafe chain willing to switch to their delicious healthy offerings.  This information could be gleaned from feedback available through social media discussions.

Too many businesses feel overwhelmed by the countless channels of information flow. They often wonder which medium for marketing would be best. Local consumers are just as much influenced by what they read from global electronic sources as they are from local newspapers.

Technology is not the problem. Rather, it is the solution. What today’s businesses need are partner consultants who can help them identify the information that they need to shape their marketing strategy in order that they may plan for success.

Succeed by delivering with passion
Create happy customer experiences

Succeeding in business requires commitment and consistent delivery of a positive experience for your customers. With so many smart phones in the market how do customers choose the right one? If price is not the object they tend to pick the one that delights in look, feel and ease of use. The smart phone that stands out from the rest is often the one that adds a positive experience to the customers life. The secret ingredient that would have gone into the making of such a phone would have been passion.

It is passion that drives us to attain excellence in what we create and deliver.

Do what you love and the passion to achieve excellence will come across and touch the heart of your customers. Such customers will very gladly pay you a compliment and the price you ask. Business succeeds best with satisfied paying customers. These are the type of customers who will become advocates of your product or service.

I still do tell people about the delicious clam chowder I had at a little café on Granville Island in Vancouver, British Columbia 5 years ago! That is the kind of free advertising you want to have spreading around. Every satisfied customer is a promoter of your business.

Remember to sell an experience. People will always remember how you made them feel. Strive to always make them feel good. They will come back for more of that positive experience.

Many a café succeeds by giving regular customers a daily experience of a moment in paradise! Yes! It may be the fancy cappuccino that first draws them in. But on most mornings rushing to work all they may have is 30 seconds to pick up a cup of regular coffee before continuing on to work.

As the coffee is being filled, for a brief moment they may close their eyes and inhale the aroma of the coffee being served up. At that moment the aroma may transport them to the top of a mountain with a panoramic view of the ocean. Ah! Yes! A moment in paradise. That experience of a moment in paradise may be what really draws the customer back to the café day after day.

A passionate café owner will strive to serve that perfect cup of coffee every time. My daily morning cup of paradise comes from freshly ground fair trade organic coffee roasted just right.

So serve up passion and let your business succeed with happy customers.

Competitive Advantage In Customer Service
Learning winning lessons from your customers

You may not be able to compete with global supermarket chains on pricing and range of products but you can compete on the quality of personal service. This advice holds true for all businesses ranging from a local retail store to a chain of stores worldwide.

The big stores tend to focus on business efficiency in order to deliver based on a template for response to generalized customer demographics. This allows smaller businesses focusing on delivering to individual customer needs to have an edge that allows them to turn a profit.

Learn from feed back given free by unhappy customers. These customers provide a real-life case study that allows you to learn and improve service. Very often the customer who is complaining will also provide the solution.

Recently I drove into a tropical beachfront resort in South East Asia. It was part of a chain of hotels worldwide. The beautifully landscaped garden leading to the sandy beach was so inviting. A walk on the beach rewarded me with one of natures’ wonders. Hundreds of tiny crabs appeared from little holes in the sand by the waters’ edge where waves gently lapped onto the beach. The sudden click of my camera scared these little creatures that at the blink of an eye disappeared into the little holes on the beach in unison.

A couple of drinks at the beach front bar and we were ready to head up to the hotel room for a shower before dinner. The room was well designed and pleasant. After the shower the spell of a relaxing evening in our tropical paradise retreat ended when upon pulling off the covers on the bed I discovered the bed sheet was stained and had strangers hair all over. It was obvious that the sheets were old and unclean. Housekeeping had to go through about six sheets to find one that was clean enough to sleep on. The next morning as a customer I complained that if only they had provided fresh clean bed sheets I would have ranked this hotel as having world class service.

Unfortunately several hours after checking out all I got was a call from a manager saying they would upgrade me to a bigger room next time. The point had been missed. The hotel management had failed to learn from this experience. All they had to do was to focus on cleanliness and hygiene immediately providing clean new bed sheets. Now all that a small bed and breakfast nearby has to do is to provide rooms that are spotless with clean bed sheets and they would succeed in gaining customers at the expense of this beachfront resort.

It is not the size of your store but the quality of service that gives an edge to the small and medium sized businesses worldwide. With the advice of a business consultant you can prepare a business plan and a marketing strategy that carves out a profitable niche for your business within the community you serve.

A little boutique Inn in Winnipeg comes to mind where the restaurant has a chef who takes it as a challenge to use only fresh ingredients to satisfy the needs of customers with allergies to artificial colorings, flavorings and preservatives in foods. He succeeds every time in creating a delicious gourmet experience that makes this Inn an attractive place to stay on your travel across the North American prairies.

Business success always comes from satisfying your customers needs. These are the people who pay your bills and make your business profitable. Treat them well always.

Cultivating An Attitude For Business Success
Positive motivators are the key to staying focused

To succeed in business you need a Business Plan and an Action Agenda that takes you towards your business goals. Staying focused on the Action Agenda is the key to success.

F O C U S is said to stand for “Follow One Course Until Successful”

Sounds simple! Yet too many business individuals get distracted by flavors of the moment put before them by others having a different agenda. It is a good idea to seize an opportunity that arises unexpectedly provided it fits into your business plan.

We may join networking groups and trade organisations and get involved in projects of the group. This is a good thing provided that these projects support your business plan or acts to motivate you to work harder at your business.

Working with a Business Consultant can improve your results. Two heads are better than one. Having a sounding board that allows you to get alternative views and a better perspective is an excellent idea.

To motivate and keep you on target with schedules it is good to have a consultant who encourages you to stick to your timetable. The best leaders are those who have consultants who keep them motivated and who themselves keep the team motivated to stick to the Action Agenda.

Delegating administrative and management functions allows business leaders to spend more time on strategy development and leadership action. Work with specialist to develop your marketing strategy and brand value. This can transform just another player in the market into a business that leads, dominates or even creates a market.

Intelligent phones did not only capture market share of the mobile phone market but did also create two new markets. Intelligent phones are reshaping how consumers buy music and access the internet. Now we have one device that can act as our mobile phone, music player and personal computer.

Allow your successes to motivate you. Make a list of all your achievements. Analyse how you succeeded in the past. List down the facts that support your belief as to why you will succeed on your present venture. Remember, knowledge is power and the more information you have of the market and the global realities that impact on your target market the greater your possibility of success.

Seeking information is critical to success. Information well analysed can help you gain insights that could excite you to act promptly in order to succeed. Timing is everything when it comes to seizing business opportunities.

Seize the day!
